Tipps zur Vorbereitung

1. Mache dir klar, wo du filmen willst. Falls du so spontan keine Stelle kennst, kannst du nachschauen, ob auf der Fotostellenkarte etwas eingetragen ist. 

 

2. Schaue dir die örtlichen Gegebenheiten (z.B. viele Bäume/Pflanzen?, Autobahn in der Nähe (Lärm)?, ...) und die Geländebedingungen (uneben, Trampelpfad, asphaltiert) vor Ort oder mit Hilfe von Satellitenbildern an. Nur kleine Vegetation kann eventuell mit herkömmlichen Heckenscheren gestutzt werden.

 

3. Mache dir auch klar, wann du filmen willst. Checke den Wetterbericht im Voraus und nochmal bevor du losfährst/-gehst. Achte auch auf den Sonnenstand. Schau dir meine Tabelle unterhalb dieses Textfelds an, um meine Empfehlungen über Wetter zu sehen.

4. Besorge dir die passenden Fahrpläne. Ich nutze immer das Kursbuch der Bahn, das hat die besten Infos. Vor allem auf DSO und in WhatsApp-Gruppen (s.u.) gibt es auch Fahrpläne zu Sonder-, Zusatz- oder Güterzügen.

5. Einige geeignete Fahrplanquellen:

  • Faltflyer zur Linie (Hrsg. Bahn)
  • Fahrplanheftchen (Hrsg. Verkehrsverbund)
  • DB Bahnhofstafel (Online » bahn.de/ris) oder DB Navigator
  • Aushangfahrplan (am Bahnhof, ggf. fotografieren)
  • DSO-Fahrzeitenforum
  • DSO-Livesichtungen
  • Whatsapp-Bahnsichtungsgruppen - Ich empfehle "Sichtungen West" für NRW, RLP und NDS. Klicke hier, um der Vorstellungsgruppe beizutreten. Beachte: es wird nicht sehr gern gesehen, wenn du dich in Sichtungsgruppen nicht ausschließlich auf Sichtungen und Fahrpläne beschränkst. Je nach Strenge der Admins kann "Gequassel" Konsequenzen haben.

Wenn du den Fahrplan ausdruckst:

 

6a. Damit nichts verloren geht, hefte die Fahrpläne am besten nach Strecke und/oder Richtung (auf einer Strecke) zusammengetackert in einen Ordner ab.

 

7a. Mache dir eine Übersicht über den Inhalt des Ordners.

 

8a. Nimm immer nur den Fahrplan mit, den du auch wirklich brauchst, sonst kommst du durcheinander und hast zu viel Gewicht. 

Wenn du den Fahrplan digital nutzt: 

 

6b. Speichere den Fahrplan nach einem klaren Schema ab, am besten in einem Cloud-Dienst, den du auch auf dem Smartphone/Tablet nutzen kannst.

8b. Stelle sicher, dass du den Fahrplan dann auch offline abrufen kannst.


9. Wenn du unterwegs eine Internetverbindung hast, um so besser. Nutze diese Möglichkeit, um reagieren zu können, wenn Züge zu früh oder zu spät sind oder gar ganz ausfallen.

 

10. Stelle sicher, dass auf deiner Kamera genug Speicherplatz ist und der Akku voll geladen ist. Unter Umständen kann ein Ersatzakku oder eine Powerbank sowie eine zweite Speicherkarte hilfreich sein.

 Das Wasser könnte die Ausrüstung beschädigen. Allerdings sieht eine

 Schneedecke, egal ob mit Sonne oder nicht, sehr schön aus.

 Verursacht Störgeräusche in Videos. Außerdem könnten Dinge wegfliegen

 und/oder ins Bild fliegen 

1. Get clear about where you want to go. If you have no idea, check my map for suitable points.

 

2. Check the surroundings at your place (consider: are there many plants that obstruct the view? Is there a noisy motorway?) as well as the topography (uneven? trail? tarred?) by going there in advance or using satellite photos or checking Mapillary. Small plants could be cut with a normal hedge trimmer.

 

3. Also get clear about when you want to go. Check the whether forecast (you probably know better English websites than me) in advance and once again before starting your journey. Pay attention to the solar altitude. Have a look at the table below this text for weather ratings.

 

4. Get yourself suitable timetables. For Germany, I recommend the railway guides published by Deutsche Bahn, as they contain every passenger train running along your line. In the timetable forum or WhatsApp groups, you might also find timetables for additional, special or freight trains.

 

5. Some nice timetable sources:

  • railway guide
  • folding flyer (published by the operating company)
  • timetable booklet (published by the linked transport system)
  • online departure/arrival list or "DB Navigator" app
  • printed timetable at the station (you could take a photo of it)
  • timetable forum
  • train sighting forum
  • WhatsApp train sighting groups - for North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony and Rhineland-Palatinate, I recommend the group "Sichtungen West" (most people also speak English there, click here to join the introduction group). Notice: please do not start discussions and conversations in such groups - people dislike that. You could the thrown out of the group when not restricting yourself to train sightings,
  • "Zugfinder"

When using a printed timetable:

 

6a. Organize all your printed timetables in a certain order (e.g. chronological, growing numbers, etc.) . You can staple timetables of the same route and/or direction together.

 

7a. Create a table of contents.

 

8a. Only carry the timetable you will actually need. It prevents you from getting confused and saves space and weight.

When using a digital timetable:

 

6b. Save the timetables following a clear schema. It is useful to use a cloud  that you are able to access from your smartphone/tablet.

8b. Make sure you have got offline access to your timetable.


9. If you are able to access the internet while waiting, use it to double-check whether the desired train is too early, too late or even cancelled.

 

10. Make sure, your camera's battery is full and that there's enough memory left. If need be, a replacement battery, a powerbank and/or second memory chip can be helpful.
